An old name returns for Ashley?

Thursday 29 November 2012 6:00

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is reportedly in talks with Scottish football club Rangers for the naming rights to its iconic Ibrox Stadium.

Should the deal go through it will reportedly bring a return to the Sports Direct Arena name that was previously given to St James’ Park before payday loans firm Wonga signed a sponsorship deal that reinstated the stadium’s original name.

Rangers have been exploring image rights deals since the Charles Green-led consortium took over the troubled club last June, shortly before they were demoted to the Third Division.

According to the Mail, the opportunity to have his company name on a world-renowned football venue greatly appeals to Ashley, who is expanding his Sports Direct business in Scotland.
